Beyond the Box: Seeing the World Like an Entrepreneur
Limited Capacity filling up

The world is changing and the job force is changing with it. In today’s dynamic global economy, the most successful enterprises aren’t looking for workers who know a lot about only one thing. They are seeking employees who are nimble, curious and innovative. The work done by lower-level accountants, computer programmers, engineers, lawyers and financial analysts is already being outsourced; soon it will be done by computers. The good jobs of the future will go to those who can collaborate widely, think broadly and challenge conventional wisdom — precisely the capacities of an entrepreneur. Kyle wants to share his journey and illustrate to parents and students the importance of developing an entrepreneurial mind-set. It's not about thinking about the first job, but a lifetime of jobs.

Local Boy Makes Good: Finding Your Way in Your Own Backyard
Limited Capacity seats available

Charlie Plowman grew up in La Cañada Flintridge, an avid reader of local newspapers such as the Valley Sun and the Pasadena Star-News (especially the sports sections.) He went on to study journalism at USC and sought to pursue a career in sports broadcasting. It wasn’t long, however, before Plowman turned his sights to elsewhere, toward a bold concept -- close to home. He thought his hometown would benefit from a newspaper that did more to tie together the community, one that provided the opportunity for local residents to keep up with their neighbors and friends -- a print version of Facebook, before Facebook. And so, in September 1998, he launched the La Cañada Flintridge Outlook, an audacious move considering he would be an inexperienced publisher going up against an established 56-year-old competing publication. And it worked. It worked so well, in fact, that, in 2007, he set out to duplicate the effort in the next city over, in Pasadena, figuring out that the best way to tailor the community feel of the LCF Outlook to a city as large and diverse as Pasadena would be with a focus on philanthropies and private schools. That worked, too, so the Outlook expanded again in 2013, moving into San Marino. Plowman will discuss why local journalism remains so important in all the communities Outlook newspapers serve.

I love what I do because I help people daily, and I was inspired by a JPL scientist and LCHS teacher. I'm an eye doctor, I do not work in a hospital, and I'm my own boss. USC’s K-12 STEM Community Outreach for low-income & underrepresented minority students
Limited Capacity seats available

Research has shown that schools with large numbers of racial and ethnic minorities, low-income students, and English language learners are systematically under-resourced compared to schools serving middle and upper class and white students. These schools have fewer well-trained teachers, fewer advanced courses, and less access to academic basics leading to science achievement gaps for their students. DJ Kast’s talk addresses these issues and the K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) pipeline model that has been created at USC to overcome these students’ science achievement gap and which is leading to a much higher participation rate of these students in science programs at the university level. As such this USC K-12 STEM program can function as an example for other universities that want to create such a program for the minority students in their catchment areas.

I love what I do because I help people daily, and I was inspired by a JPL scientist and LCHS teacher. I'm an eye doctor, I do not work in a hospital, and I'm my own boss. I turn down the lights and ask patients: "which is better, 1 or 2?" But there is so much more to it than that, and I get so much more out of my job than that. I work for myself, which means I accept all the blame and take all the credit for my work. This presentation will examine how you can try to "have it all" if you look within yourself.

Beyond the Box: Seeing the World Like an Entrepreneur

Navigating Medical School and Life as a Physician
Limited Capacity seats available

Do you think you want to be a doctor? Does someone else want you to be one? What does it take to get into medical school? And what does life as a physician look like? Come hear from Dr. Harlan, a Pediatrician, Professor at Keck School of Medicine of USC, and a La Canada parent. He directs the "Introduction to clinical medicine" course at Keck for first and second-year med students. Dr. Harlan will discuss: the requirements needed to apply for medical school, the admission process, what medical school courses at Keck look like, and what life as practicing physician entails. Medicine is a profession that has room for scientists and humanists alike.

I broke many records and became the fastest American world champion in my sport of JIU JITSU and conquered many things people said I couldn't I owe it all to the mindset of never losing I would either win or Learn.
